During a restoration, worn or stiff regulators should definitely be replaced, as worn-out springs and dirty mechanics lead to misfires and loss of power. The regulator is specifically matched to the original BMW 600 electrical system and the corresponding ignition distributor and should be carefully installed and then put into operation with the correct ignition timing.
